Acrylic is more durable than it looks. It's also ruined more easily than most people expect — usually by someone trying to clean it.

The most common way a clear acrylic frame, organizer, or display case is destroyed isn't a drop or years of use. It's a spray bottle of glass cleaner and a paper towel.

The short answer

Mild dish soap, warm water, and a microfiber cloth are all acrylic actually needs. Ammonia-based glass cleaners and paper towels cause damage that cannot be undone.

Why Acrylic Isn't Glass, and Why That Matters

PMMA technical data sheets list a minimum of 92% visible light transmission, with a refractive index around 1.48–1.50. It's also why even slight cloudiness becomes noticeable.

M80–M100

Rockwell Hardness

The highest surface hardness among common transparent plastics — harder than polycarbonate, still softer than glass. That gap is the entire problem.

150–210°F

Max Operating Temp

Heat deflection under ASTM D648 testing sits in the 150–210°F range. This is why acrylic and dishwashers don't mix.

Acrylic is more impact-resistant than glass, but its surface is softer and far easier to scratch. Anything mildly abrasive you'd use on a window without a second thought will mark acrylic permanently.

The property nobody mentions

Ammonia-Based Glass Cleaners

ACRYLITE's official care guidance explicitly lists window cleaning sprays among the products that should never be used on acrylic sheet. Röhm, the German manufacturer behind PLEXIGLAS®, gives the same guidance: cleaning agents should be free of benzene, alcohol, organic material, and thinners.

Ammonia chemically attacks the PMMA surface. The result is immediate clouding or crazing — a network of fine surface cracks. Neither is reversible. At that point the piece isn't dirty; it's damaged. Paper Towels and Reused Rags

Paper towels are wood pulp. Under magnification they're closer to a very fine abrasive than to a cloth, and dragging one across a statically charged, dust-covered surface is essentially light sanding.

Rags you've used before carry a second, less obvious risk: they hold on to grit from previous jobs. You won't know a cloth was contaminated until the scratches are already there.

Full-Strength Alcohol

This one trips people up because alcohol seems gentle. It isn't. The Canadian Conservation Institute, in its guidance on cleaning museum display cases, warns that solvents in common household cleaners can cause crazing, and that stronger solvents cause acrylic to craze and soften.

If you need to disinfect, dilution is the whole game. ACRYLITE permits isopropyl alcohol diluted to roughly 30% strength, or 3% hydrogen peroxide. Straight 70–99% isopropyl alcohol from the drugstore, used repeatedly, will craze a piece over time. Never pour it directly onto a surface either — it wicks into edges and seams, where residual fabrication stress makes cracking far more likely.

Acetone and Anything in That Family

Acetone doesn't damage acrylic. It dissolves it. Nail polish remover, lacquer thinner, gasoline, benzene, and toluene all belong in the same category — solvents that manufacturers list as outright incompatible. No dilution or careful technique makes this safe.

The overlooked source: perfume and essential oils. If you keep fragrance on a tray or in a perfume organizer, overspray and oil drips land on the surface constantly. Citrus oils attack PMMA especially fast. This is a common and often overlooked cause of fine cracks in beauty organizers — and the same risk applies to acetone remover near a nail polish rack.

Remove Loose Dust Without Touching the Surface

Use compressed air, or rinse with clean water. Because of the static issue, this step is not optional. Every particle you leave in place is a particle you're about to grind into the surface.

Wash With Mild Dish Soap and Lukewarm Water

A few drops of dish soap in warm water is all it takes. Manufacturers all recommend the same thing, because soap and water cleans effectively without reacting with PMMA.

Wipe With a Clean Microfiber Cloth, Light Pressure

Blot and lift rather than scrub. Pressure doesn't clean acrylic better; it presses whatever is on the cloth into a surface that's softer than glass.

Wipe in straight lines, not circles. On a surface this clear, circular scrubbing leaves swirl marks that catch the light from every angle — the same problem detailers deal with on car paint. Circular motion has its place, but that place is polishing, not cleaning.

Dry With a Second, Dry Microfiber Cloth

Don't let it air-dry — evaporating water leaves mineral spots. And don't rub aggressively while drying, since that regenerates the static charge you just neutralized.

If you'd rather use a dedicated product, plastic-specific cleaners such as Novus No. 1, Brillianize, or Plexus are formulated for PMMA and include antistatic agents. Röhm specifically recommends applying an antistatic plastic cleaner and not rubbing it dry, which preserves the dust-repelling effect for weeks.

How to Remove Scratches From Acrylic — and When Not to Try

Before reaching for polish, run the fingernail test: drag a nail lightly across the mark. If it catches, the scratch is too deep to polish out completely. If it doesn't, you can usually improve it. The Canadian Conservation Institute is candid about the limits here — only the finest scratches in small areas can realistically be removed, and the work is laborious. That's an honest expectation to start from.

Worth Attempting

If your fingernail glides over it: The standard fix is Novus, a three-bottle plastic polish system sold at hardware stores and online. Start with No. 2 (fine scratch remover), then finish with No. 1 to restore shine. If the mark is clearly visible but still doesn't catch, begin one step coarser at No. 3 and work down to No. 1.

Watch the numbering: Novus is numbered the opposite way from sandpaper — a higher number is more abrasive, not less. Automotive plastic polishes such as Meguiar's PlastX work on the same principle. Always work in small sections with a clean soft cloth.

Not Worth Attempting

If your fingernail catches: Leave it alone. Polishing works by removing the material around a scratch, so leveling a deep one means taking the whole panel down to the depth of the mark — which distorts the surface far more than the scratch ever did.

The same goes for chemical clouding from ammonia or solvent exposure. Polishing removes material, but it can't reverse a reaction that has already altered the surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Windex on acrylic?

No — original Windex is ammonia-based, and ammonia chemically attacks the surface, causing permanent clouding or crazing. Use mild soap and water instead.

Is vinegar safe on acrylic?

Skip it. Vinegar is acidic, and while it's gentler than ammonia, it offers no advantage over soap and water on acrylic.

Can acrylic go in the dishwasher?
